The Artwork
Art for Digital Printing
The art requirements for digital printing are a little more relaxed than with screen print since color separation is not needed. That being said, your print will still only be as good as your digital art file. Below are the basic guidelines for providing optimal files for digital printing.
Since one advantage to DTG printing is the ability to have a shorter setup and runtime, be sure to send the art over for review as soon as it is available.
Adobe Illustrator
- Vector Graphic Images - the gold standard for art files, these are shapes created using "paths" instead of pixels
- All fonts should be converted to outlines, or the font file should be sent along with the artwork
- Be sure to embed any linked files, but just like with the fonts, also provide the support file separately
Adobe Photoshop
- Raster images - design elements created using flat pixels
- Best for very complex graphics or photographic images that need to hold fine details or color gradients
- Images should be created at a minimum of 150 dpi when viewed at print size
- Up-sampling low resolution images is a common error - this technique does NOT make the graphic usable for digital or screen printing.
