Screen Printing 101... From Spot Color to Process Printing
There are four basic screen printing approaches, from spot color for simple designs to simulated process photographic reproduction on dark garments.

Spot Color
The most common type of printing for basic designs and logos with solid fill areas is called spot color screen printing. Sharprint can print a maximum of 12 colors on our large automatic presses. Click here for info on art requirements and fees.

Spot Color
w/ Half TonesSimilar to spot color but incorporating gradients of those colors to give depth to a design, yet not as complicated as a full color process design. To get more info about art requirements and fees for screen printing click here.

4 Color Process
Photographic reproduction on white or light garments or bags is done using CYMK, or four color process screen printing. Don't be fooled by the name, this process uses between 5-7 screens. For more details click here.

Simulated Process
Photographic reproduction on colored or dark garments is done using simulated process screen printing. This is the most difficult and costly type of screen printing and uses between 8-10 screens. Click here to find out more.
It's important to understand some basics about the different screen printing approaches, and the costs associated with each, so you can design your art in a way that will look great and stay within your budget. Our customers will often email their Sharprint Graphic Designer a layout weeks prior to the project getting printed for our feedback about which approach will best suit their needs, both from a quality and a cost standpoint.
